CHAPTER TWELVE

Mount Grace Castle

Everelda was sobbing dramatically.

“We only w-went because A-Ammie wanted to apologize t-to Sir Morgan,” she wept. “S-She wanted to go but I did not. I told her not to go, but she did anyway!”

“She wanted to go? Why?”

“B-Because last evening’s feast did not go well. She did not want S-Sir Morgan to t-think we were all ill-bred!”

Hollis was listening to his niece sob, snot, and choke her way through a story about how she and Amarantha ended up in Bronllys and now Amarantha was missing. Hollis had already spanked Everelda once, hence the hysterical weeping, but now his anger at their actions was being overtaken by utter horror.

His daughter had gone missing.

“You two deliberately left the castle without an escort,” he said, barely keeping control of his spanking hand. “You stubborn, foolish women left and now see what has happened? Amarantha is gone!”

Everelda let out another squeal of hysterics as Morgan spoke up. “We looked for her until the storm came,” he said. “Even then, we continued to look, but it became clear that she was nowhere to be found. I would have continued searching, but I could not let Lady Everelda return to Mount Grace alone, so I have come with her to ask you for more men to search the town.”

Thunder rolled overhead and a bright flash of lightning spilled in through the lancet windows of the great hall. It was full of soldiers on this night, men finding shelter out of the elements, but they didn’t have any idea what was going on at the dais as the men surrounded a weeping Everelda.

One of those men was Farran.

He’d come to the castle, as he always did, for the evening meal so that he could once again sit with the object of his desire and once again try to speak to her, to charm her and woo her. It was an awkward dance they did almost every night, but on this night, he’d walked into a disaster.

His intended was missing.

And he knew why.

“Search all you will,” he said, his gaze darting between Hollis and Morgan. “You will not find her, for she is not there.”

Hollis, Morgan, and Kenan looked at him with concern and distress. “What do you mean?” Hollis said. “How do you know this?”

Farran’s jaw was ticking faintly. “I know exactly what has happened,” he said, looking straight at Hollis. “She is not missing as much as she has run away. Slipping away into the village was only part of the story. She intended to do this all along. Your daughter has run away.”

Hollis’ eyebrows flew up. “Run away?” he repeated, shocked. “Where would she go?”

“Anywhere that was far away from me,” Farran said, his face beginning to turn red with rage and embarrassment. “I told you that you should not have given her a choice in the matter. You should have simply told her she was going to marry me and that would have been the end of it. Now she has done something foolish and I do not deal with foolish women.
